Creative Every Day check-in

by Lisa on Monday, February 15, 2010

Ugh, I’m frustrated. I so very much loved Art Every Day Month, and had hoped to carry that momentum forward.

Knowing that we are moving–somewhere!–in June has very much distorted my creative every day focus.

To be fair, I am solving problems creatively and I am making room for creativity in the future. But creativity in the present, in the form of artistic pursuits, is — blocked.

The home theme feels ironic. I’m preparing our townhouse for sale, so I’ve been packing and storing some belongings off-site. I started dismantling my studio space this weekend. ::sound of soul dying::

Somehow, I need to make room for art to happen in the transition. (If only to reduce the amount of art supplies I’ll need to pack and move!!)

Oh, Lisa, the thought of dismantling my space sends a chill up my spine…

Yes, you must have art in your days, especially during this transition. How about fiber? Some luscious cashmere, maybe, and some circulars to create something soothing?

Andrea, I need to re-learn how to knit. My daughter knows…

I was thinking yesterday as I was looking at all the holes in my favorite wool socks, that darning might be a soothing thing to do in the evenings…

It is. You can get into a rhythm that becomes almost zen-like. Any kind of needlework can do that. And there’s also something about holding all that color and texture in your hands…

Knitting is a great rhythm. As you know, Maks has gotten good at this, plus crocheting, and I see him use it as a soothing activity too. With grandma’s looks, it seems to me all the more something you should do. I found it took my about 20 rows or so to feel back in the groove of basic knitting.

Sorry you have to deal with the preparing the nest to leave it…

@Andrea, I agree…

@Martha, I love that you reminded me of Grandma. I’m going to start with darning my cashmere socks, then resume/take up knitting.

I wonder if I have any muscle memory for tatting lace? Remember she taught us to do that, too?

Yes, but you had both more natural talent and more persistence than I did with all of the fabric arts. Knitting was one of my more advanced bits – and eventually quilts of course — but I was a terrible tatter!

Ah, but, Martha, remember that I really have no liking for the sewing machine and not a lot of patience for cutting things out neatly. You and Mare are much more adept. I think I must have a prejudice against noisy tools. Prefer hand drills, hand-sewing….
