Dear Don’s Next Job

by Lisa on Thursday, February 18, 2010

Dear Don’s Next Job (and our new place to live):

We’ve been doing a lot of thinking and planning around you, but you are like that child who doesn’t like to have his/her picture taken—you hide your face. Not meanly, not maliciously, but playfully, like a game. Still, it’s time to show yourself. Just a peek, okay?

Sometimes we see you in the city, with tall buildings all around and views of bridges or monuments in between. You abound with delightful bookstores and coffee shops and flower vendors and are in walking distance of the library and a park.

Then, again, just as often we see you in a stunningly beautiful, pastoral place. There are trees and meadows and lakes and distant mountains. (And although you are away from the busy places, you have crystal-clear internet access.)

Wherever you are, Don’s work is engaging and lets him use the best parts of himself. There’s a community there that has room for one more family. I am seen as a necessary partner, but my own work is valued and given room.

And, new home, wherever you are, you are not too big or too small, but have room for every person and activity we love and do every day. You have natural light and fresh paint and a safe area to let the dogs out.

New life, we don’t have to buy new clothes or change ourselves to fit you. You will fit us as comfortably as a T-shirt.

Eager to meet you,

Lisa & Don and family

UPDATE: We are moving to McLean, Virginia this summer so Don can be the Upper School Head and a terrific school called The Potomac School. We are very pleased about this!

Signed, notarized, and extra wish-dust liberally sprinkled.

Thank you kindly, Kelly!

Ooo lovely things in store for you Lisa! May they get here sooner rather than later.

Lisa Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Thank you, Megan. And, it’s lovely to see you here.

What would your letter to the future look like?

Martha Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 2:57 pm

This is definitely a fine future vision. I endorse it entirely! Of course my one tweak would have it land in the PNW, but I know the truth on that score — just indulging in one extra piece of fantasy amid your highly reasonable expectations of the future. I look forward to visiting you both in your own clothes in that new place!

Fingers crossed. Toes too. And some chocolate thrown in for good measure and encouragement.

Lisa Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 5:56 pm

Excellent. That’s bound to lure this next job out of hiding.

Sometimes wishing—or a reasonable request—does make it so. Just like that, one day you’ll turn around and it will fall together—crystal clear internet access and all. You watch…

And let me second that notion for the PNW! I’d just luuuuve to see ya’ll here…
