The iPad is like the Mirror of Erised from the Harry Potter universe.
The Mirror, you may remember, always showed the viewer his or her most deeply held desire. (And Erised is Desire backwards).
It’s very much a what-you-make-of-it experience. Which is very powerful.

I adore your Harry Potter references.
I always thought that the iphones seemed magical – snapping fingers and waving hands and things appear and disappear.
This is the only description of an iPad I have bothered to read. I knew you’d have something fascinating to say. Now I won’t be able to look at my iPhone without thinking about my deepest desires. And whenever I see anyone texting, I’ll just think, ah, they’re looking into the mirror of their desires.
Kelly! so nice to see you here. And, yes, Megan, I agree about the iPhone. All that flicking to scroll and such seems to command the hands into theatrical and magical-seeming gestures.
Leah, always glad to oblige. I’ve been watching CED2010 eagerly from my corner, by the way. I took your suggestion at got a big watercolor journal and have been messing up some pages in preparation for I-don’t-know-what.
I want an iPad sooooo bad!!
Me too! Ours was just a loaner.
I am older than you. My first Mac was a 512K Enhanced. Probably the only other person who remembers that computer is Steve Jobs. I’ve been on a 17 ” MacBookPro for last cpl of years and although it is great, it is a heavy over-sized portal and an under-sized desktop. I just bought an iPad. I think it is going to change everything. Unless I travel for an extended period of time, I will no longer take the laptop that is to big to fit on my lap. IPad has some lite apps like Pages, Keynote and Numbers so you can do basic work on it and then send to your home machine.
I am still sorting out some organizational stuff with it but this is as exciting as when Mac came out with a color monitor and I could get on Compuserve. (I told you I was older than you). The beauty of technology is when it reduces the time and path between thought and capture. As a writer, I went from long hand to computer. I hated typewriters. Anyway. Just stumbled on your site. Like the iPad, what a treat.
Not older… My first Apple was an Apple 2e and we had a Mac 512K too! Thanks for visiting… glad you found the site.
What an interesting observation! I have often wondered what an unique study it would be to look at the collection of apps different people have on their ipads…truly the study of Erised…
